Connecting Columbus Neighbors to Essential Benefits and Resources

Our mission, our story, and why this work matters locally.

How we started

Steel Wheels was born out of the need to support our Columbus community. In 2018, a few passionate residents noticed that many of their neighbors were eligible for critical benefits like Ohio SNAP, Medicaid, and WIC, yet remained unenrolled. This gap not only affected individual families but also limited the potential of our vibrant neighborhoods. Inspired by the strength of community and the untapped resources available, Steel Wheels was founded to bridge this divide.

We quickly realized that vehicle donation could serve as a sustainable funding model for our mission. By accepting car donations, we could raise the necessary funds to provide a free benefits-research service for locals. This model empowers our community—turning idle vehicles into vital resources for those in need. Steel Wheels is committed to ensuring every Columbus resident has access to the support they deserve.

Our mission

At Steel Wheels, our mission is to connect neighbors in Columbus with essential programs and resources. We believe everyone should have access to benefits like Ohio SNAP, Medicaid, OWF, WIC, and HEAP. Through our vehicle donation program, we provide a free benefits-research service that helps individuals and families navigate the often-confusing landscape of available support. Our goal is to empower every neighbor with the knowledge they need to improve their lives and access vital services.

Our principles

Why this city

Columbus is a melting pot of cultures and communities, where neighborhoods like Franklinton, Linden, and Hilltop showcase the city's diversity. However, there are significant gaps in benefits enrollment among low-income families and individuals. Many residents may not be aware of programs like Ohio SNAP or HEAP that could alleviate financial burden. By focusing our efforts in Columbus, we can address these gaps directly and empower our fellow neighbors to improve their quality of life, one family at a time.

Join Steel Wheels in making a difference. Your vehicle donation not only helps fund our free benefits-research service but also connects your neighbors with the essential resources they need.
